AR-15 » Rifles, Uppers, Lowers, Barrels, and more. Site Notices [UPDATED] Top Gun Rights ... I'm sure at least some of you have seen this picture of the KAC-style dimpled barrel floating around, but my question is why would you want to do that to a barrel?

We believe it valuable for customers understand our reasons: Adding the dimple would break through the corrosion resistant nitride layer on the barrel since we drill our gas ports after nitriding. Since most customers do not use a dimple, adding an unprotected path for corrosion is not advisable.

Then, use the included marking pin to mark the spot and then prepare to drill using a standard drill press or optionally, run a 1/8″ drill bit directly through the center of the screw. If multiple dimples are required, repeat the steps above, just running in the set screw into the now dimpled barrel.

I am in the process of getting all my bits and pieces together for my next AR build and the gas block I want to use is a set screw type and my barrel is not dimpled. I planned on getting the SLR rifleworks or KAW dimpling jig, but was curious if anyone had luck using a set screw GB without dimpli...

It would need a massive increase in surface area and some kind of forced airflow to make a difference. As it is, what it tends to do is make the barrel unpredictable when hot. Unfluted barrels are usually more predictable, if not more accurate when hot, but you'd only really notice it if the gun was very accurate to begin with.

I bought a rainier arms mountain series barrel and it didn't come dimpled. I really dont want to spend something like 45-50 bucks for a gas block jig, and I had a conversation with a local gunsmith and he claims you dont even need to dimple the barrel, however I read from other sources that you do.

Use this AR-15 barrel dimpling jig instead! This no-frills AR-15 barrel dimpling jig will help you figure out where to drill that dimple for your gas block set screw if you've got a barrel with no dimple. It's just a wonky gas block with a hole drilled from the gas port through the top. Step 1: slide it on the barrel.

There’s also “dimpling,” machining a series of dimples along the barrel’s surface, making it reminiscent of a golf ball. It’s been said that dimpling produces better thermal efficiency in shedding heat; of course, that would also depend on depth and surface area.

It's pretty easy to do without a jig IMHO. Get your gas block set up where it needs to be and the rifle is functioning properly. Take one screw out and use a transfer punch to mark your dimple location. Tighten that screw back up, and repeat on your second screw. Remove GB and dimple barrel on drill press.
