To see if your rifle has the proper parts, unload, open it up, and pull the buffer and spring out. Shake the buffer. Do you hear the weights clacking back and forth? Good. If you hear shot rustling around in there, replace the buffer. Count the coils. There should be 37 to 39 for carbines, 41 to 43 for rifles. Editor’s Note: This article is an excerpt from Gun smithing the AR-15: The Bench Manual by Patrick Sweeney.

For 9mm, heavier is better. Maybe consider a Vltor A5 with the A5 H3 or H4 buffer? 9mm buffers allow bolt bounce even in semi-auto fire...which is never a good thing. BB is just not as critical when firing 9mm vice firing rifle cartridges. Many of these 9mm buffers will run you $50-$75.

This is essential. A buffer tube won’t be the same without a buffer and the spring. The buffer won’t work if it’s in the confines of a buffer tube. In short, make sure that you have the right parts that can be assembled and put together in the rifle itself. Conclusion. If you’re looking for a 9mm AR buffer, then one of these six could be yours.

The AR-15/M-16 rifle, as do all self-loading rifles, needs a recoil spring to cycle the action. Due to the lightweight design of the AR, the spring also requires a buffer, or extra weight. The earliest buffers were simply plastic tubes that rode inside the tube and in front of the buffer spring and gave the spring a bearing surface against which to work on the carrier and bolt.
