FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Will 50 beowulf use standard ar mags in action?» often ask the following questions:

🔬 Will 50 beowulf use standard ar mags?

The Numbers on the.50 Beowulf A 400-grain.50 Beowulf cartridge hits 1,800 feet per second, making it one of the slower AR-15 cartridges. It hits with a mammoth 2,878 foot-pounds of kinetic energy, and it drops 50 inches by the 300-yard mark.

🔬 Will standard ar mags fit 50 beowulf?

You do not need to change the feed lips or the follower on a standard 5.56/.223 magazine, you just need to bevel the front lip at about 45 degrees (the exact angle doesn’t seem to be a big deal) so the giant .50 Beowulf bullet goes up and, this is the key part, the leading lip of the brass case hits the little ramp and goes up it vs. hanging. In this next photo – see how the lip of the case will catch?

🔬 Will 50 beowulf use standard ar mags in bulk?

That's a qualified yes, depending on the PMag version and the bullet you are using. GI mags. are gtg. I am seriously considering selling one of my excess 5.56 uppers and putting together a set up in .50 Beowulf. I seem to recall reading that standard USGI mags will feed this round reliably.

And one of the benefits of going with .50 Beowulf is that you can still use the same magazines that you would with .223/5.56 NATO ammunition; you’ll just have a much lower capacity. The only parts you need to swap out to turn an AR-15 chambered in .223/5.56 NATO to one in .50 Beowulf is the barrel and the bolt carrier group.

I did use quality magazines and avoided cheap stuff and I also used the anti-tilt followers – just regular 5.56 followers – nothing special. In a standard 20 round aluminum 5.56/.223 magazine, you can fit up to seven Beowulf rounds. In a 30 round magazines, you can fit up to 10.

In fact, the .50 Beowulf is compatible with standard AR-15 upper and lower receivers, handguards, buffer systems and small parts. The only major differences between the Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf Hunter and a standard AR-15 are its barrel, bolt, gas block and magazine.

50 Beowulf is an elephantine round designed to increase stopping power of an AR-15-platform rifle by a factor of 10 billion or so. The cartridge is just short enough to fit in a standard AR magazine, although for obvious reasons (it's fat) it won't double stack like . 223 Rem./5.56 NATO cartridges.

Alexander Arms will sell you .50 Beowulf mags that they claim will not handle 5.56 ammo. Rest assured that standard 5.56 mags can handle the Beowulf effortlessly. We know, because we used traditional double-stack 5.56 mags, including PMags and C-Products metal mags, and they all functioned perfectly as single-stack .50 Beowulf mags.

The only thing required to change to the new.50 Beowulf cartridge is to swap the upper for one chambered in 12.7x42 cartridge and switch over to 6.5 Grendel Bolts. This effortless two-step retrofit will allow shooters to experience the big bore hard-hitting performance, while still being able to use their existing AR-15 platform.

Similar to the .458 SOCOM, the .50 Beowulf cartridge was designed and produced in the early 2000’s with the idea to generate a large bore cartridge that could be used in the AR-15/M16 style weapons that traditionally are chambered for the 5.56×45 rounds. The reason was again because of the low stopping power with the traditional rounds, and a large, .50 cal cartridge gave the promise for a round with devastating power in close quarters to mid range shots.

The magazine is a slightly modified standard 5.56 mm M16 magazine, and larger capacity magazines can be used with the Beowulf by carefully bending the feed lips to reliably feed the larger cartridge. Twelve of the .50 calibre cartridges can fit into a 30-round M16 magazine.

With normal bullet weights between 300 and 400 grains (19 and 26 g), overall cartridge length shorter than that of an AR-15 magazine well, and holding to pressures of 33,000 psi limited by the AR bolt strength system, the .50 Beowulf is best described as a low-velocity, heavy caliber, making its ballistics roughly equivalent to those of early .45-70 Government rounds rather than the higher pressure rounds tolerated by lever-action rifles such as the Marlin Model 1895.
