FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Will a 1 in 9 twist ar shoot 62 grain bullets?» often ask the following questions:

🔬 Will a 1 in 9 twist ar shoot 62 grain?

"long range High Power shooters often select 1:8, 1:7.7, 1:7, or 1:6.5-twist barrels to stabilize the long 77, 80 and even 90 grain bullets used for 1,000 yard competition." AND "There is, of course, an exception: if you want to use loads utilizing the heavier, 75-77 grain match bullets currently used by Spec-Ops troops and other selected shooters, you'll want a 1:7 twist barrel.

🔬 Will a 1-8 twist ar shoot 53 gr bullets?

Using a 1/7 twist, I shoot 53 grain flat base bullets for 100 yard reduced, 77 grain bullets for 200 and 300 yards, and 80's for 500, 600 and LR. At 100, accuracy testing reveals I can expect, with either 53's or 80 grain bullets, groups in the arena of 3/4 minute for a 20 round string of fire-iron sights, prone with sling.

🔬 Will a 1 in 9 twist ar shoot 62 grain ammo?

A 1/9 barrel, in MY experience, is the most accurate option when firing 55 or 62 grain ammo. Since I dont shoot the current en vogue rounds that are extra long and heavy, requiring a fast twist, I have no need for a barrel that is proven by the US Army to have a quick burn out rate.

Higher number twist rates perform better with lighter grain bullets, while lower number twist rates perform better with heavier grain bullets. Common wisdom for 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. indicates those barrels with a rate of rifling at 1:9 or slower (1:10 etc.), in general, perform best with lighter bullets—60 grains or less. If you’re looking for a general-purpose, workmanlike utility player that pleasantly gobbles up anything thrown its way, 1:8 is a solid choice.

I believe my AR’s are 1:9, and I shoot both 55 gr and 62 gr bullets. From your discussion, I assume that I am fine with the 55 gr, but that the heavier 62 gr bullet would be better suited to a 1 ...

Rifle twist and bullet choice are no different. When it comes to slower rifle twist, i.e. 1:14, 1:12, 1:9, you really shouldn’t be shooting bullet weights over 65 grains or the equivalent length for a 65-grain bullet. It won’t damage your rifle, but you will have very poor accuracy.

If you’re buying or building any 6.5mm rifle and intend to use high ballistic-coefficient bullets from 140 grains up, a 1:9 twist is minimal and 1:8 is better. The .30 calibers are not necessarily more cooperative, but most .30 caliber cartridges were designed for bullets up to 220 grains.

This tool allows you to figure out which bullets will stabilize out of your rifle given your rifle’s twist rate. This tool also helps you to identify which barrel twist rate you want to buy if you already know which bullet you plan to shoot.

It all comes down to barrel twist, length and velocity. In a 1-9 twist barrel the 62 grains FMJ is again optimum, not the upper edge of what works. The M855 projectile is nominally .907" long so rounds of similar length will stabilize equally well even if they are of similarly low quality.

1/9 shouldn't have any major issues until 69+gr. Youre good to roll with that 62gr Sent from my GT-P5113 using Tapatalk 2

I think the general consensus is that the 1 in 9 twist rate is pretty optimal for the 55-grain and 62-grain projectiles. It's when you go into the high-60's and the 70+ grain weights that the 1 in 8 and 1 in 7 twist rates are seen to be beneficial.

Most modern AR-15 barrels will come in three twist rates: 1:9, 1:8, and 1:7. The 1:9 barrel is best for stabilizing lighter and mid-weight bullets between 45 and 77 grains. AR-15 barrels will have the specifications stamped or engraved somewhere on the barrel, like these Windham Weaponry models. (Photo courtesy/Windham Weaponry)
